Voter Registration Day 2025

This National Voter Registration Day, we’re reminded that the Virtuous Cycle of Change starts with participation — and to get in the spirit of change, don’t forget to watch the new version of Majority Rules!

Today is National Voter Registration Day — and, as we said last week, it’s about more than checking a box. This is the moment to turn preparation into action: ensuring women’s voices are represented at the ballot box and celebrating the systems reforms that open doors for women to lead.

Women already vote at higher rates than men, but barriers like the SAVE Act and strict ID laws still create disproportionate hurdles for women — especially mothers and the 90% of women who change their names after marriage. These are not small inconveniences: they are systemic barriers to women’s political power.

That’s why today is so important. Parity starts with participation.

Representation Depends on Registration

RepresentWomen’s 2025 Gender Parity Index shows the U.S. is only halfway to parity nationwide. According to our latest report:

Without systems reform and equitable access to voting, progress will continue to stall.

This isn’t just a film — it’s a tool.Majority Rules equips advocates and communities with a powerful narrative and actionable vision for what’s possible. The Story of Alaska: When Rules Change, Women Win

When Alaska adopted ranked choice voting, it became the ultimate test of democracy.

In the very first special election, Mary Peltola made history as the first Alaska Native elected to Congress. Competing in a crowded field that included former Governor Sarah Palin, Peltola’s victory showed how reforms like ranked choice voting open the door for women and candidates of color to succeed.

Since then, more women have run — and won — under Alaska’s system, proving that when we change the rules, the playing field shifts for women.

Watch the conversation: RepresentWomen Executive Director, Cynthia Richie Terrell, joined filmmaker AJ Schnack, Alaska Senate Majority Leader Cathy Giessel, and FairVote CEO Meredith Sumpter for a discussion hosted by FairVoteon why Alaska’s story matters for women’s representation.
