I applaud Tom McMahon’s Jan. 3 letter, “Take ‘Dulles’ out of our airport,” calling for updating the name of Dulles International Airport. I suggest a name in the spirit of Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport being named for the late Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall.
Last year, our nation mourned the death of Sandra Day O’Connor. O’Connor was a political pioneer. In Arizona, she became the first woman in the nation to serve as a state Senate majority leader. In 1981, she became the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. After her retirement, she made ongoing contributions to our society, including founding iCivics to promote civic awareness for our nation’s youths.
What better legacy for O’Connor than to rename Dulles Airport in her honor? Doing so would again make her a pioneer; the United States has never named a major airport for a woman.
