My name is Karen Stout and I am a sixth-generation Californian from Los Angeles. I am a senior at U.C. Santa Cruz pursuing a B.A. in Legal Studies and I am excited to be a RepresentWomen intern this spring!

Throughout my undergraduate life, I have been passionate about social justice and gender equality. As a student, I first became interested in law and politics during my first year of college due to my passion for writing and policy. That passion has led me to several different experiences, such as working as a research assistant studying the role of religion and peacebuilding in modern Africa as a part of the Merrill Undergraduate Research Mentorship and studying the impact of firearm restriction bills on intimate partner violence in California as a student in the U.C. Sacramento program. As an intern at Political Solutions, the largest female-owned lobbying group in California, I learned how to advocate for systemic change in my own state and how to advocate effectively for issues I care about.

These experiences have reinvigorated my desire to make change throughout my career in politics and as an attorney. As a RepresentWomen intern, I hope to continue my research on women’s issues by studying the impact of ranked-choice voting on election outcomes for women and learning how to fight for better policy that brings more women to the table.

Outside of my professional life, you can find me playing video games, planning vacations for when the pandemic is finally over, reading a good book on my balcony, or adding to my quarantine plant collection.
